Prescriptions

Your veterinary surgeon may prescribe Prescription Only Medicines category V (POM-Vs) only for animals under his or her care, having carried out a clinical assessment of the animal and can only prescribe the minimum amount required for treatment. You may obtain POM-Vs from your vet OR ask for a prescription and obtain these medicines from another vet or pharmacy.

It is illegal for anyone other than a qualified veterinary surgeon to diagnose what is wrong with a horse and to prescribe POM-Vs.

A prescription may not be appropriate if your horse is an in-patient or immediate treatment is necessary.

You will be informed, on request, of the price of any medicine that may be prescribed for your horse. The general policy of this practice is to re-assess an animal that requires repeat prescriptions every 3-12 months, but this may vary with individual circumstances. The standard charge for a consultation is approximately £35 (Dec 2012).

It is illegal for anyone to import drugs from outside the UK or process them without having gained and paid for authorisation from the Veterinary Medicines Directive.

When you make a request for a repeat prescription for your horse’s drugs, please allow at least two working days before the drugs are needed. If you need items posted please allow an additional two days.
